Dear Tun M

Dear Tun M,

Malaysia as it is nowadays owes a lot to you and your visionary leadership. We have grown in leaps and bounds into a diverse developing nation, envied by our neighbours. There were times when your decision was met with criticism and backlashes, but you persevere; ensuring that your policies crystallized into positive outcome.

I am one of your fan. Being an UMNO member, I always revel in your achievements in leading the party through ups and downs. Walking down the aisle of history at PWTC, the sight of your picture gives me goose bumps. Your followers adores you and your peers respected you.

I was one of the hundreds of people on that fateful day in Alor Star when you announced your resignation from UMNO. It was a poignant message which reverberated through the halls of Putrajaya. That defining moment shows how powerful a figure you are, even after retirement.

It was not easy post 1998 as we had to work hard defending the party after Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim started the “Reformasi” movement. The movement was so strong that you have to use all your power to subdue it. Rally after rally were organised which strengthened the movement as days gone by. At that time, your leadership was truly tested and your deputies stood by you. We all stood by you. Even during those trying years, you shines like a beacon. An anchor in which the party hold on to so as to remain relevant and continue the legacy.

Last night, I saw a picture of you among throngs of people during the Bersih 4 rally. To say that I was shocked would be an understatement. You have been very critical of our Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak especially in 1MDB issue. But this is really pushing it.

During your time in office, you chastised all rallies by the opposition. All your political enemies were dealt with the full force of the law. Some of them were locked up for years under ISA. So, please make me understand, educate me.

Do we defend our president or just follow your lead?
